On Day 3 of the 4th Global Diaspora Week (GDWeek), we had an incredible session titled “Introduction to the Cycle of Volunteer Management.” This insightful gathering was led by experts from the Diaspora Emergency Action and Coordination (DEMAC), the DRC Diaspora Programme, and the Ukrainian Volunteer Service, who shared strategies to elevate the impact of diaspora-led organizations.
The session explored critical aspects of volunteer management, from recruitment and onboarding to motivation, support, and recognition. Nataliia Kalantaienko from the Ukrainian Volunteer Service introduced the Cycle of Volunteer Management, an essential tool comprising eight key stages to promote sustainable communities and long-term organizational growth.
Participants, including dynamic leaders from across the globe, shared their diverse experiences and challenges in volunteer management, from addressing volunteer burnout to cultivating relationships and promoting the value of unpaid work. The discussions highlighted the diversity of volunteering across cultures and the importance of meeting both volunteer and organizational needs.
Key takeaways highlighted:
Effective volunteer management ensures sustainability and strengthens community impact.
Understanding volunteers’ motivations, affiliation, achievement, or power is essential to keeping them engaged.
Building trust and clear communication are critical for sustaining relationships and avoiding dropouts.
As a global diaspora community, we remain committed to supporting organizations in their journey to create meaningful and lasting change. Whether it’s through training, partnerships, or resource-sharing, GDWeek continues to highlight the power of collective actions.
A heartfelt thank you to our organizers, facilitators, and participants for making this session a success. Collectively, we are building resilient networks of changemakers that drive impact locally and globally.
Stay tuned for upcoming GDWeek events, and let’s continue this journey of learning and collaboration.
