On January 27, 2025, the Global Diaspora Confederation (GDC) successfully hosted the 4th Global Diaspora Assembly (GDAssembly), bringing together 100+ diaspora leaders, stakeholders, and partners to address critical issues in humanitarian and development efforts. This year’s GDAssembly showcased a dynamic blend of thought-provoking discussions, innovative collaborations, and practical insights, reinforcing GDC’s commitment to building a coordinated global diaspora ecosystem.
Key Highlights:
Opening Keynote Address: The event opened with an inspiring address from GDC Chair, Peter Kwok, emphasizing the Assembly’s theme, “Global Diaspora, Local Impact: Advancing Systematic Approaches in Development and Humanitarian Efforts.” Attendees were encouraged to explore how diaspora organizations (DOs) can work collectively to enhance grassroots impact.
Global Diaspora Discussion: Attendees engaged in focused breakout sessions tackling pressing global issues around climate action, disaster management, health and wellbeing and gender inclusion. Diaspora leaders highlighted the importance of grassroots partnerships and targeted action in vulnerable regions and creating sustainable frameworks, enhancing coordination roles, and utilizing diaspora expertise for global and local impact.
Announcement of the First Cohort of GDC Members: A major milestone of the GDAssembly was the announcement of the inaugural cohort of GDC Members. These members, whose contributions are already impacting millions, represent a diverse range of diaspora organizations committed to collaboration, capacity building, and creating meaningful change within their communities and beyond.
GD Tree Presentation: A much-anticipated highlight was the introduction of the Global Diaspora Tree (GDTree) initiative, which aims to foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, and tangible grassroots impact.
Call for Applications for the GDExpo: In preparation for the GDExpo- an impact initiative of GDC, applications were opened, inviting diaspora organizations to showcase their work, initiatives, and innovations. This initiative aims to highlight the incredible contributions of diaspora organizations and promote cross-sector collaboration.
IOM Closing Keynote: The GDAssembly concluded with a powerful address from Ms. Ugochi Daniels, Deputy Director General for Operations, International Organization for Migration (IOM), who highlighted the transformative potential of a unified diaspora network in addressing global challenges.
Young Diaspora Summit: Attendees were inspired by the presentation of the young diaspora voice on the progress planning for the Young Diaspora Summit
