Today, 22nd Jan, in line with the 4th Global Diaspora Week (GDWeek) plan, we have just concluded the first event of the GDWeek’s activities. We delved into "How to Provide Psychological First Aid Across Borders" in partnership with DEMAC and the Danish Refugee Council’s Diaspora Programme. This session was not just a conversation; it was a step toward equipping diaspora organizations with the tools to address critical mental health challenges in their communities.
Avin Mesbah from DEMAC set the tone by emphasizing the importance of collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and mental health support within diaspora organizations. The session, led by Hussain Jafari, a psychologist and mental health trainer, delved into vital topics such as self-care, mindfulness, resilience, and the art of providing psychological first aid.
Key takeaways from this session are highlighted below:
Practicing grounding and mindfulness techniques for better self-care.
Using mental health tools like Insight Timer, Calm, and Headspace to manage stress.
Recognizing symptoms of distress and offering compassionate support using simple, actionable techniques.
Understanding the significance of resilience and proactive habits in overcoming mental health challenges.
What truly stood out was the personal connection and actionable insights shared. Hussain's message on balancing self-care within a collectivist culture resonated deeply, reminding us that supporting others starts with taking care of ourselves.
In line with these efforts, DEMAC announced the launch of a new sponsorship program to support humanitarian diaspora organizations, enabling them to participate in workshops and key humanitarian events.
To those who attended and contributed, thank you for making this day truly impactful. Let’s continue building a world where diaspora organizations lead the way in humanitarian action and mental well-being.
